The correct end of the working day – the key to success

“It’s very important how you finish your day. This can determine your mood for the rest of the day; this can affect your privacy, overall happiness, sleep quality, and also set the tone for the next day. ”
Lynn Taylor, a US job organizing expert, wrote the book Tame Your Dreadful Office Tyrant: How to Deal With a Capricious Boss and Succeed at Work (Tame Your Terrible Office). She says that the most successful people usually make up an action plan to solve current problems that may prevent them from focusing on the events of the next morning, both planned and unexpected.

1. They update task lists.
Taylor mentions that successful professionals always keep track of constantly updated to-do lists. She adds: “However, in the last 10 minutes, they also check how complete the set for the day are. Such people appropriately change their final list of affairs, rather than abruptly leaving work, hoping that they will remember all the nuances the next morning. ”
2. They put the desktop and computer in order
Project implementation takes much longer if you are unorganized. Taylor says: “Chaos on the desktop and computer makes it difficult to clearly think and effectively prioritize; it also complicates the for important documents. Keep digital and paper documents in order to find them faster when they are needed. ”
3. They review the amount of work done.
Taylor thinks: one should not only concentrate on what has not been done yet, but also look back at the work already done. Kerr agrees with her: “Even one minute of analysis of the work done can give an insight into progress, and on a particularly difficult and congested day, this may remind you that much more has been done than it seems. Psychological studies show that even a brief review of the work done is a great way to boost your mood. ”
4. They analyze the completed day.
Successful people think not only about the projects they were engaged in during the day, but also try to understand why went according to plan or vice versa. Taylor says: “Experienced professionals know that if they don’t learn, they don’t grow.”
5. They reduce the volume of “urgent” conversations.
You have been in touch all day, but letters and calls come in a continuous stream – right down to the last minutes of the working day. Taylor points out: “This is where time management skills come in – successful people can decide what needs an urgent answer and what can wait.”
Try to postpone long conversations on important issues until the most productive time – that is, until the morning. Taylor advises: “Consider whether the discussion of important issues can be postponed for a specific time of the next day. Otherwise, the case may be delayed until late, you and your interlocutors will run out of power and time will tighten. This delay will also give time to think better about the issue. ”
6. They retain concentration
Taylor explains: “As a rule, in the evening people are worse off and it is harder for them to concentrate.”
Try to keep your concentration and do not get involved in extraneous matters at the very end of the day.
7. They define the tasks for the next day.
Successful people make a list of what will be ready by morning, and determine the main tasks for the next day. Taylor advises: “Perhaps you have a couple of cases that are of primary interest, but it’s better to them down so that the next morning is a base to get started.”
Kerr adds: “The more thoughts you can put on paper, the higher the likelihood that you will be able to focus on outside of work with a clear head and you will be ready for the beginning of the next day.”
8. They tell you if you can contact them until the next morning.
The most successful people analyze how free they will be and whether it will be possible to contact them if necessary, and then tell those who may need it. Kerr says: “Do you go into the“ complete darkness ”with complete loss of communication with the office? Or do you make some exceptions? It depends on the situation, and the only correct answer does not exist. The most important question to myself is: “How prepared are I to be available during off-hours, so that it does not interfere with my rest?” ”
9. They analyze the schedule the next day.
There is nothing worse than starting a working day by receiving the news that in five minutes you will have an important meeting. Kerr argues: “Successful people can make a schedule and plan for the next day and – more importantly – imagine how this day will be.”
This allows you to start working with greater confidence and less stress.
10. They are grateful for the support.
Good teams are built on the basis of gratitude and recognition. Kerr says: “The habit of thanking someone at the end of the work day is an incredibly effective way to improve your own mood and end your and someone else’s day on a good note.”
